Describing Josh Garrels' music is like trying to describe that first time you put your head under water and came up alive. There's before (Hmmmmm...) and after (Oh!).
Weaving gracefully through folk, bluegrass, hip hop and Latin American flavors, Garrels' songs are unflinchingly intimate and unapologetically spiritual. He's an artist who walks the walk. And his soulful expressions of a hard-won salvation remind us what music does best: unite and heal.
He is often compared to Sufjen Stevens, Rufus Wainwright and even Jose Feliciano, but Garrels is not so easily contained. His songs, which include wonderfully eerie, wordless hymns among them, cut across all demographics and pre-conceptions of 'music with a message.'
Largely unheralded, Garrels' growing following is the result of word-of-mouth enthusiasm from the few folks who've had the privilege of hearing him live. He doesn't 'book' gigs so much as go where he's invited. We've invited him here to share his timeless stories.
